Originating from ancient cockfighting birds brought to Great Britain by the Romans in the 1st century, the Old English Game evolved significantly after the banning of cockfighting in 1849. The breed’s transition from fighting to exhibition showcases its adaptability and enduring appeal. Today, these chickens are celebrated in poultry shows for qualities beyond their historical use in competition. While not primarily an egg-laying breed, Old English hens produce about 120 white eggs per year and are noted for their longevity, often living up to 15 years. They tend to become broody and are known as excellent, albeit sometimes aggressive, mothers. Besides their ornamental value, these chickens also offer good muscle meat distribution, making them desirable as table birds. For show purposes, the males are usually dubbed, having their comb and wattles removed, to enhance their aesthetic for exhibitions.
